This week I read
The Door to December by Dean Koontz. This book is almost as old as I am, published in 1985 and was one of the last books Koontz published under his pseudonym Richard Paige. Hubby picked this book up, along with about 20 other Dean Koontz books at one of the Borders going-out-of-business sales. And boy was it worth it.
The Door to December is a psychological thriller about the mind control on a young and impressionable mind. Six years ago, three-year-old Melanie was kidnapped by her own father Dylan McCaffrey. During those six years Melanie was tortured by her father and his 'business' partners. Put into a deprivation chamber for days on end and without any contact to the outside world, Melanie's bubbly childhood personality has been reduced to an autistic state.
Now, Dylan has been found in his home in LA with two other men, beaten to death beyond means of any human strength. The same day, Melanie has been found wandering the streets of the neighborhood, naked and lost. The police have called Dylan's ex-wife, Laura, to the home to help shed some light on the strange and confusing things that were found in Dylan's home. What were they doing in that house? And why were they treating Melanie this way?
Strange things start to happen as they slowly peel back the layers of Melanie's tortuous past. A radio comes to life, speaking to Laura and the body guard she hired, warning them that
It is coming and they need to run and hide, all while hovering in the air of her kitchen. Doors open free of any human assistance. Melanie comes in and out of her catatonic state only to scream in fear of a door opening to December. And men are continued to be found beaten to death in un-humanly ways.
Lieutenant Dan Haldane starts to uncover the secrets of what was done to Melanie but he can hardly believe what he's learning. What is
It? What is the door to December? Who or what is killing these men in such gruesome ways? How do they stop a power that they can't see? That doesn't even seem to be part of the real world? And how will Laura bring Melanie out of her catatonic state and understand that she is safe now with her mother?
This is definately a must read. It was so good it made me want to read only Dean Koontz books for the rest of the year.
