How to pass the time during a power outage

Hi Friends, In case any of you are ever in a power outage for a full week like we are, here are nine ways to pass the time:

1) Go to Old Navy and shop for cute new clothes.

Sooo excited to wear these
2) Marvel at the 5 beautiful pairs of shoes that I've purchased in the last 6 weeks

1) Rainbow Flip Flops 2) DSW flats 3) DSW rain boots (which I totally needed during the
hurricane weather) 4) Thrifted Biviel heels, and 5) Elizabeth & James flats
3) Craft with the Hubster

Hubster cut the letters and I wound up with pretty colored yarn
4) Watch what the girls do all day while we're at work

No wonder they have so much energy when we get home
5) Paint something

Final product pictures to come soon
6) Try to work from my cell phone

Exhausting. Hurricane also means shotty cell service until 'restored'

7) Visiting the pool to beat the heat

8) Going out to eat

9) Take one good picture in the rain.

Hopefully none of you will have to go through a week with no power. And hopefully ours will get turned on again soon. The good news? My office finally has power, so I'm at least able to work and sit in AC during the day!!

HAPPY 100!

WHAAAAT??? I didn't even notice when I posted earlier today that I have hit the 100 mark for followers. I'm so excited! Thank you to everyone who is following along in my journey to have a bit more style in my life.

Who needs electricity?

Well, Hurricane Irene made it's way through Virginia and while the storm wasn't that bad, the aftermath sure is. We have been out of power since Saturday afternoon. No AC, no TV, no stove or microwave. And word is that we probably won't get our power restored until Friday or Saturday.

What's great about this though is playing board games with the hubby, making dinner on our camping grill and not having to go to work since the power is out there too. For now, I'm chillin in a coffee shop to get some work done. Then maybe a little pool time to beat the heat. It's like a mini vacation. I guess Irene isn't that big of a bitch.

Chillin at the coffee shop. Using their power.

Outfits to return soon. For now, I'm essentially wearing my swimsuit everywhere which is not the prettiest sight. If I was wearing something worth taking a picture of today, it would be this:

What to Wear Friday: You chose 'that'!

Thanks to everyone that voted for my outfit today! Between here, facebook and the This or That website, we got 112 votes and 'that' is my winning outfit with about 78% of the votes (if I did my math right). So here it is folks, the outfit that you chose for me. I love it. Thanks for participating.

I hope all of you have a great weekend. Hubster and I will be boarded up inside our apartment waiting out Hurricane Irene. Candles and flashlights at the ready for the power to go out. But until then,  Dexter and True Blood marathon it is!

What should I wear?

I'm indecisive. Yet, I like to plan ahead. This makes it difficult when finding what to wear.  I have a closet full of clothes and yet it takes me at least an hour to decide what I'm wearing that day. So I've decided that once a week I'm leaving it up to you, friends. Tell me what I should be wearing. This? Or That?

Vote by leaving me a comment to this post, or click on this link to vote online! Oh, and make sure I look pretty. I'm depending on you.

What to wear tomorrow? This or That

Thanks!

Squeeze out every last bit of summer

It's almost fall people. I am truly trying to squeeze every last bit of summer out of my wardrobe before fall hits. I'm not ready to put away my shorts & tanks & sandals & swimsuits yet. So, I'm not going to. I will boycott fall. At least for another couple of months.

Too bad it's freezing in my damn office and I would become an ice cube without sweaters, blazers and my comfy little blanket that I brought into the office. Yes, I have a blanket at my desk. Sometimes I wish it was a Snuggie....

My first

Yesterday was my very first earthquake ever. I know you heard all about the east coast earthquake. Yes, it was only a 5.9 and that's nothing compared to west coast standards. But as a midwest girl who then moved to CO and now am out on the east coast I had no freaking clue what was going on. My first thought? A semi has run into the building (the road is right under my window) and it is crumbling to the ground. I'm going to die.

Luckily I soon noticed that everything was shaking just in time for me to not make a screaming fool out of myself unlike some of the other people that sit around me in the office. I saw at least one person jump up and RUN. Where she was going? I'm not really sure.

I got pooped on

I got pooped on. This isn't just a saying to describe how badly my day is going. I really, honestly got pooped on today. Let me tell you the story. I took our dogs out to go to the bathroom before I left for work this morning, picked up Roxy's buisiness and it fell right back down onto my feet!! There was a hole in the damn poop bag. I hope this isn't a sign of what my day is going to be like.

At least I look good now that I've cleaned up. I've got at least that going for me today.

Sunday Storytime: Harvesting the Heart

Jodi Picoult is my all-time favorite author. She has the ability to beautifully craft her characters in a way that makes you feel like you're known them all of your life. I haven't found a Jodi Picoult book that I haven't loved, and this book is no different.

As a young child, Paige O'Toole's mother abandoned her and her father. Now, Paige finds herself running away from her own life and wonders if she has more in common with her mother than she thought. After high school graduation, Paige runs away from her past in Chicago and starts a new life in Massachusetts. She finds a job at a diner and wins the hearts of everyone she meets with beautiful portraits that she draws, perfectly displaying each person's personality and passion.

While working at the diner Paige meets Nicholas Prescott, a beautiful and brilliant Harvard med student with a demanding presence. It was all over the day that Nicholas' attention was returned to Paige. Within days, Nicholas had asked Paige to marry him and the whirlwind had begun. But Nicholas' parents weren't as impressed with Paige as Nicholas was. They did not approve of their marriage and would not support them in their decision. Nicholas, standing up for his soon to be wife decided that they did not need their approval or support, and they severed ties with his parents and would start their life together, just the two of them.

Seven years later, Paige has supported Nicholas' medical school and internship at the hospital, putting off her own dream of going to an art school. As Nicholas is making his way up the ranks in the hospital and finding himself busier than ever, Paige finds that she is pregnant. This is terrifying to Paige who never learned how to be a good mom from her own mother. How is she supposed to take care of a child when her own past is filled with heartbreak. When baby Max comes, Paige finds herself being the sole parent. Nicholas is so busy at work and tired when he gets home, that all he wants is his dinner to be made, the house to be clean, and for Max to be quiet. When Paige is unable to be the perfect parent that her husband expects of her, she feels like a failure and does the only thing that she knows. She runs away. But instead of running away from her past, this time she runs towards it. Paige finds herself back in Chicago seeing her father for the first time in seven years and asking questions about her mother. Working with a detective, she finds her mother in North Carolina on a ranch and goes to meet the person that abandoned her all those years ago.

Meanwhile, Nicholas is forced to take care of Max on his own. He begins to see how difficult of a job this really is. With no other choice and his standing in the hospital in the balance, Nicholas is forced to reach out to his parents for help, who happily allow their prodigal son to return into their lives.

Max has changed everyone's lives. Paige has stopped running away from her past and is starting to find the answers she needs to move on and admit her own faults and mistakes. Nicholas begins to see how difficult raising a child can really be, but bonds with Max in a way that he never would have allowed himself before Paige's departure. They both are now able to see what is truly important in their lives, so what are they going to do about it?

I give this book a solid five stars. I found myself reading into the night and holding back tears while reading in the airplane. This was really a great book about how life changes who you are and the relationships that you have. It really puts your own life into perspective and makes you appreciate what you have.

My husband is a genius

My husband is a genius. He can fix just about anything. Today, we were out running errands and one was going to AT&T to see if they could fix my iPhone. The past month none of my apps have been working and I've tried everything! And of course, the AT&T people had no idea what to do and the closest Apple store is 20 minutes away. Idiots. Hubster, being the genius that he is, figures it out for me. Honestly, what would I do without him?

Late night, sleep tight

I got in late last night from my business trip and had hubby quickly take this picture before I changed into my PJ's and konked out for the night. Traveling exhausts me even when it's a short trip. On the plane ride home, Have you ever seen the people sleeping with their head against the window, then some movement makes their head fall and wake you up with a jolt? Yea? Well, I was totally that girl yesterday. On more than one occasion. Classy traveler right here.
