Work Style vs Real Style

My work style is so very different than what I would consider my real style. On any given day, it pains me to walk out of the house with my preppy little work outfit, but working in a corporate office now (which I'm still getting used to, btw) doesn't leave much room for self expression.

So. Because I'm not going to walk a mile to work in high heels, I add my army jacket and some funky flats for the walk to work and whatever happy hours or shopping may happen after the office hours. That way I can show off a little of my real style for at least a small part of the day.

Do you need to dress up for work? Do you hate it as much as I do? Or have you learned to love it?

I LOVE Neon Yellow!!!

Um, I think I have a problem. The other day, while walking past my dumping ground in the bedroom, I noticed a sea of neon yellow staring back at me. Shoes, purses, tank tops, etc  - ALL neon yellow.

Hmmm...I think I figured out my new favorite color?

It really is an amazing color. I already own all of the things below - and can't stop wanting more!

Do you find yourself buying a lot of things all in the same color like me?

THAT shirt

Remember back here when I asked all of you if I should keep this shirt or not? Well, I kept it and finally wore it! Honestly, I forgot that I had it as it was hiding in the back of my closet all winter.  Then, I wasn't really sure how to style it. But this simple yet elegant outfit works just fine for me.

What do you think? Did we all make a good decision to keep it?

Welcome to My Style Monday! I'm excited to see what everyone has been wearing all week.

What have I been wearing, you ask? Well, it appears that I've walked into a Target store and walked out wearing this entire outfit.  Target does it again.

MWF seeking BFF book review

Sunday Storytime

As you know from this post from last week, I've decided to take a more active role in finding friends in my new hometown. While I have plenty of friends across the country, my goal is to find a handful of friends in Minneapolis that I can call when I need a girls night or just someone to gab with.

MWF Right around the time that I moved to Minneapolis, I heard about a book (from a fellow blogger who has also moved to a new city) called MWF seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search for a New Best Friend. This couldn't have been any more perfect if I'd written it myself.

What better way to get jazzed up about making new friends (and probably making a fool out of myself in the process) than reading about someone else just like me!

The author, Rachel Bertsche is a twenty-something married woman who moved to a new city with her husband. Two years in, Rachel finds herself with plenty of acquaintances, but no close friends other than her husband. (Wow, this is all starting to sound eerily similar...). So this is when Rachel decides that she is going to get off the couch and go find some girlfriends.

She starts by researching friendship. What does friendship mean? What are the emotional and physical benefits of having close friends at a close distance to where you live? How do you make friend as an adult? What's the right way (or place!) to ask a new friend on a friend-date? Is there a quota on the number of friends someone should have?

And because I loved this book so much, I'm going to share some of her findings.

Rachel starts out by learning that there are four different types of friendships.
  1. The acquaintance; someone you'd chat with on the street or at a cafe, who gives you a sense of belonging. You should have anywhere between 10-100 acquaintances.
  2. The casual friend; a 'grab lunch' pal who often serves a specific purpose such as a running partner. You should have 10-50 casuals.
  3. The close buddy; an intimate, trustworthy comrade you can say anything to. You should have 5-10 close friends.
  4. The lifer, who's as deep and forever as family.  You should have 3-5 lifers.
She then talks about the Dunbar Number, which was developed by a British anthropologist to describe the number of relationships a human brain can maintain. This number is 150.

So here, being the list-maker that I am, I divvied my current friend list up between the four types of friendships that Rachel describes, then added them up. I have 55 friends and only three in my city!!

Boy, I've got some work to do.

Rachel's list came to 130. So in an effort to fill the 20 vacancies in her friendship circle, she took us along on her journey of 52 girlfriend dates in 1 year. She recounts her awkward first dates at the beginning of the year and how self conscious she was about everything she said and did. Do you hug on a girlfriend date? Do you tell your date that you're looking for new friends, or do you play it cool?

Her stories were a combination of hilarious and entirely relatable. I find myself thinking and acting exactly as Rachel did early in the book. And through the experience she grows and gains her confidence. She starts to learn what she's looking for in the perfect friend, and she starts putting herself out there and learns that being vulnerable is the best way to truly meet new people.

In the end, she found herself with a pretty amazing social circle. While none of the new friends will ever replace her best friends that live across the country, they are a perfect fit in her life and she is happier because of them. And who knows, maybe one day one of these new girls could fall into her Lifer category.

I give this book five stars. It was a great motivator to start my own quest, as well as a self-esteem booster to know that other normal, fun & awesome girls are in the same situation as me!

So, if you're like me and have recently moved to a new city, I would highly recommend reading this book for a little friendship motivation.

weekend plans

weekend plans

Well, my crazy last few weeks have finally caught up with me. I'm sick as a dog. Btw, I have no idea what that saying means, but I'm guessing it means I'm pretty damn sick...which I am.

So this weekend is going to be pretty low-key so I can kick this bug. I've been sick all week, and I'm sick of it.

What are you up to this weekend?

Black and White

Black and white is a a definite trend this year that I've jumped right on the bandwagon with. As much as I love my neon, I've been wearing a ton of B&W outfits lately, and this is my most recent!

Have you jumped on the B&W bandwagon?

Making friends as an adult

I feel pretty damn lucky to have such amazing friends in my life. Between high school, college, moving to new cities and taking some pretty amazing vacations, I've made close friends from all across the country;  Arkansas, LA, San Francisco, DC, Charlotte and Chicago to name a few.

Friends1

While all of those friends across the country are pretty amazing, I need a friend across the street. I need someone I can call for weekend brunch or a girls night away from our significant others.

Having a circle of friends that live in your city have tons of benefits, from your health to your sanity, and even your marriage. Even eight months into living in Minneapolis, I've noticed the benefits that a close friend has on my marriage. Lately, I find myself wanting to tell Hubster everything, even things that I should probably just be gabbing about with my girlfriends. Things that hurt Hubster to hear, but hurt me to keep bottled inside.

But, when you move to a new city knowing few-to-no people there, you realize how hard it is to make friends as an adult. Making friends as an adult is not like high school or college where you meet new people in class, at a party or through friends. You have to put some hard work into finding and maintaining new friends as an adult.

I've heard that most adults make new friends through their own children, and since that's not happening any time soon, I knew I needed to get down to work and find some new friends in my new hometown.

I've lucked out in my last two "new" cities with some pretty stellar friends that I made through work. But I can't sit around waiting for friends to emerge naturally (or through my new job, which I don't think is going to happen).

Friends3

Now, most of you know that I'm from Minnesota, so Minneapolis shouldn't be considered a new city for me. But during the four years of being away (moving to Denver and then to Richmond, VA), the majority of my Minneapolis friends had also moved away! So when Hubster and I moved back to Minneapolis in September, I found myself itching for a few new friends.

So this is where my hard work starts. I'm on the search for my some new friends - in Minneapolis!!

Friends2
I'll keep you posted on my progress along the way. And Step #1 is reading a book about exactly this situation: MWF seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search for a New Best Friend.

Those DIY pants

Remember the DIY polka dot pants that I shared with you back here? Well, I'm wearing them again today. I'm really happy I made these, and have gotten some amazing compliments on how spring and summery they look!

What do you think? Do you love them too?

I'm also finally wearing my new Nine West heels that have been tucked in my closet all winter long. I'm so excited to finally show some toe.
